Carom Seeds
Carom seeds, also known as ajwain, are the small, pungent fruits of the Trachyspermum ammi plant. Despite being called “seeds,” they are a fruit with a strong, bitter, and intense flavor often compared to thyme due to the presence of thymol.
Used widely in Indian, Middle Eastern, and African cuisines, they are rarely eaten raw. They are typically dry-roasted or fried in oil to soften their flavor and release their aroma. This makes them a key ingredient in many breads, savory snacks, and lentil and bean dishes.
Beyond their culinary use, they are revered in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda for their powerful digestive properties, effectively helping to relieve indigestion, bloating, and gas.
